The Good Twin

{Approx. 5 years ago
The Sleeping Tealeaf in Singapore}

With pen and clipboard in hand, Arie slowly walks the perimeter of the tea house as he jots down notes for the week's order. It's going to be a light one. The shop is relatively new - less than a year - and is still building its customer base. As of now, it's only himself, Rylan and one other associate - and only one of them is getting paid.

The task seems even more tedious today as his mind is preoccupied by other things, Just the day prior, the monks introduced the brothers to a new player in their cause, a woman with divine insight. Even with his experience, the idea that there are people with divine connections a la Joan of Arc is completely foreign to him. It's awe-inspiring, but also signals an inevtiable change in the current dynamic.

A soft ring from the bell above the door fills the empty shop and catches Arie's attention. He turns, his customer service smile already affixed, and finds himself gazing upon Maggie Mora. The very woman that had been occupying his thoughts.

His smile dims to a more natural warmth, unsure if she's here for personal or business related reasons. He tucks the clipboard under his arm as he makes his approach. "Hello - Maggie, right?" He asks, wanting the Prophet to know that he recognizes her. Because he often gets mistaken for Rylan, albeit for obvious reasons, he makes a concerted effort to not do the same to others. "Can I get something for you?"

(This doesn't suck...)

Maggie, sunglasses pushed to the crown of her head, ambles down the sidewalk. She sips cola through her straw, dark eyes taking in the sights. Hybrid cars putter down the street. The pavement is clean. Alarmingly spotless. Singapore is ruthless about maintaining it's reputation for cleanliness. Chewing gum and littering? Punishable by law. A smile tugs at Maggie's mouth. In her mind, she imagines what would happen if she chucked her soda can at the side of a building.

(They'd definitely clobber a bitch.)

At first, Maggie smirked at the country's laws. Obviously, it was easy to avoid littering and gum chewing. Then she realized smoking was prohibited in certain areas of the city. After driving five miles outside the Katong District to light up, she's made the decision to quit. Maggie wears the patch on her right arm like a badge of honor; the Prophet doesn't half ass anything. Yes, this includes her "calling."

Whatever that means.

Without realizing it, Maggie makes her way into the Sleeping Tea-leaf. A sense of calm washes over her. Tea and biscotti help stave off her tobacco cravings. She wonders if the menu has—

"Hello - Maggie, right?"

Maggie turns to meet the face of Arie... or is it the other one? Her smile freezes.

"Can I get something for you?"

The Prophet wills her face into a friendly expression. "Sure," she replies reluctantly. "Can I see a menu?" (Is this the demon?) Both the men seemed nice; still, her skin crawls at the memory of one of them burning a demon to a crisp.

"Remind me of your name..."

The Good Twin

Arie grabs a menu off the nearby counter and leads his sole patron to an empty table. He places the two-sided care menu on the table. The lettering is cursive with a lot of space between each individual item to occupy more 'real estate' as they don't offer much besides various teas and pastries.

"Arie," he says, unbothered by the need for clarification. Though most people can often tell them apart over time due to various differences in personality, it is quite difficult to do so initially - and this is only their second meeting. "Rylan typically only stops by to help with shipment once a week. And even that's a struggle to pull off."

He steps back, allowing Maggie some space to seat herself at the designated table. He assumes this is a chance meeting as the Prophet seemed taken aback to find one of the twins here, so he doesn't otherwise acknowledge their shared connection to the Katong monks.

"Anything catching your eye?"

"Arie."

Ahh, okay. Maggie relaxes. The human twin.

"Rylan typically only stops by to help with shipment once a week. And even that's a struggle to pull off."

Maggie sits down, placing her clutch purse on the table. Anything containing cash is kept in her immediate sight. Always. Her mother drilled that habit into her. A dark voice reminds Maggie that her mother should've been watching her husband; his scheming ass, ultimately, cost them everything. The prophet sweeps the nasty thought under the rug. (Careful; you're having a good day...)

Arie places a menu in front of her, however, she's more interested in sizing him up. With the overload of information from the monks, she didn't get a chance to get to know him.

"Anything catching your eye?"

"Just get me a pot of your favorite thing on the menu," she says. Maggie folds her arms, a smirk tugging her mouth. "So...

"How long you been a weirdo like me?"

"Sure thing," he says, thrown a little off kilter by her quick response as he collects the menu. He loves a mint, but the aromatic flavors of jasmine are hard to top. He's about to say as much when -

"How long you been a weirdo like me?"

He chokes on the words before ever having the opportunity to espouse them. This girl doesn't hold any punches, does she? He barely knows her and she's questioning him about that in a very public (sans people, to be fair) place.

"Oh."

Arie never considered himself a 'weirdo' though he understands her meaning. He isn't even entirely sure how he ended up on this journey other than the obvious. Rylan is a consistent driving force for most things in his life. It's down right co-dependent.

"A few years, I guess." He's nervous and voice threatens to crack, but he holds strong. He glances up to assure himself that no one else has entered the shop even though it would have been obvious if they had. "But I'm not like you." Beat. "What I mean is, I'm not naturally... gifted like you. Or Ry." (Gifted? Pretty sure Ry sees it as more of a curse. I suppose it depends on her perspective.) "I had to study and practice until I could do what I do."

"Oh."

Maggie glares at Arie, noting how he pauses. (Chico, calm your tits...) She clocks their surroundings. No one pays them an iota of attention.

"A few years, I guess."

(Bruja.) Maggie nods with understanding. She remembers him mentioning his studies; it's intriguing. Yet she can't help looking at him a bit... differently. That old Catholic guilt claws at the back of her mind. She grew up believing witches shouldn't be allowed to live. A problematic Bible teaching, yes. But a teaching nonetheless. Despite all the good she's seen witches do, Maggie harbors something of a...

Polite wariness.

Is their power rooted in something dark?

"But I'm not like you. What I mean is, I'm not naturally... gifted like you. Or Ry."

She folds her arms. "Right." (Ry? Gifted?) She rolls the choice of words around in her head. Surely, there must be an upside to Ry's abilities. Apparently, he's going to live forever; that has its perks.

"I had to study and practice until I could do what I do."

Maggie touches Arie's arm. "We can talk about something else, by the way..." She gives him a supportive squeeze. "I don't wanna make you feel comfortable at your place of work.

"But I'm a straight shooter." She shrugs. "You'll learn to appreciate it." (Or not. I don't care, really.)
